What Our Inspectors Check
Bemac’s licensed technicians follow the Ministry of Transportation’s Passenger/Light-Duty Vehicle Inspection Standard.
This is a province-wide, government-regulated process that applies the same way at every certified inspection station in Ontario.
Our car safety inspection checklist covers 12 main areas:
- Brakes: Pad and shoe wear, lines, callipers, and parking brake function
- Lights & Reflectors: Headlights, taillights, signal lights, and reflector condition
- Tires & Wheels: Tread depth, sidewall condition, and wheel mount integrity
- Steering: Play, response, and condition of steering components
- Suspension: Ball joints, springs, shocks, and ride height
- Exhaust System: Cracks, leaks, and overall structural condition
- Windshield & Wipers: Cracks, chips, and wiper blade function
- Seats & Seatbelts: Anchors, latches, and webbing condition
- Frame & Body Structure: Structural integrity and corrosion
- Mirrors: Interior, exterior, and side mirror function
- Fuel System: Lines, tank, and cap for leaks or damage
- Instruments: Speedometer, odometer, and dashboard indicators
For the full technical breakdown, you can review the MTO’s Passenger/Light-Duty Vehicle Inspection Standard.
Common Reasons Cars Don’t Pass
Many used vehicles fail a vehicle inspection due to issues with tires, brakes, steering, and other common wear or maintenance problems.
If you spot any of these on your vehicle, plan for repairs before you book:
- Bald tires: Tread depth of 2 mm or less
- Worn brake pads: Shoe lining at or below 1.6 mm
- Exhaust leaks: Any crack or leak (not just soot around joints, which is normal)
- Suspension issues: Worn ball joints, weak springs, or an alignment height difference of 25 mm or more
- Windshield damage: Cracks or chips over 13 mm inside the wiper area, or cracks extending 50 mm or more into the wiper zone
- Steering problems: Excessive play or worn components

How to Prepare for Your Inspection
A little preparation helps us complete your vehicle safety inspection faster and gives you a clearer picture of your vehicle’s condition:
- Bring your vehicle ownership or bill of sale
- Bring all sets of keys for the vehicle
- Disclose any known issues upfront, since this helps us focus our checks
- Allow 1 to 2 hours in your schedule (most inspections take 60 to 90 minutes)

What Happens After the Inspection?
After your inspection, there are two possible outcomes.
Pass
If your vehicle meets the requirements, you’ll receive your Safety Standards Certificate. The certificate is valid for 36 calendar days from the inspection date, so plan your registration accordingly.
Fail
If your used vehicle fails the inspection, we provide a detailed written report showing exactly which items did not meet Ontario’s standard and what repairs are needed.
Most car repairs can be completed in-house at Bemac, so you don’t have to chase down a second shop for parts, repairs, and re-inspection.
